13.5.1 Targets

The main objectives of IGU in the field of climate action for 2024 and beyond, as stated in the strategic plan” are:

1. Carbon Neutrality Target: To gradually reduce carbon emissions by 2030 and become a carbon-neutral campus by 2040. In this context, the target is to reduce electrical energy consumption from 3.901,005 kWh in 2023 to 3.500,000 kWh in 2028.

2. Renewable Energy Use: At least 50% of electricity consumption will come from renewable sources; renewable energy capacity is planned to be increased from 3.915,000 kWh in 2023 to 4.000,000 kWh in 2028.

3. Sustainable Transportation: Switching to electric shuttles, expanding bicycle paths, and implementing low-emission transportation practices on campus.

4. Waste Management and Circular Economy: While the total amount of waste is expected to reach 42.300 kg in 2028 from 43.031 kg in 2023, the amount of recycled waste is aimed to increase from 21.423 kg in 2023 to 23.500 kg in 2028.

5. Increasing Green Areas: In line with the strategic plan, it is aimed to increase the green area ratio from 26% in 2023 to 27% in 2028.

6. Academic Contribution and Scientific Collaborations: The university aims to rise from 58th place in Turkey to 40th place in the Green, Environmentally Friendly University Index ranking in 2028, and from 674th place to 500th place in the world ranking.
